India opens embassy in Timor Leste, Prime Minister Modi announced at ASEAN-India summit

Timor-Leste joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2022 as an observer, before becoming a full member.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced his decision to open the Indian embassy in Timor-Leste. Mr. Modi announced the decision while co-chairing the annual ASEAN-India summit in the Indonesian capital.

“This decision reflects India’s importance to ASEAN and its relationship with Timor Leste,” he said. The MEA said the decision was warmly welcomed by Timor Leste and ASEAN member states.

Timor-Leste joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2022 as an observer, before becoming a full member. ASEAN is considered one of the most influential groups in the region, and India and several other countries, including the United States, China, Japan and Australia, are its dialogue partners.
